St Barth French West Indies Vacay

Everyone asks why we picked St Barths...Ray has a customer that goes every year and he has been telling me how much they like it and how he wanted to go for years...I just wanted to go somewhere in the Caribbean and I had read this island was unlike the others as there are no big resorts, no people trying to hassle you on the beach to braid your hair and no poverty stricken areas, plus it is French!  We both agree that it lived up to our expectation plus some!

Every direction you looked was beautiful, the water was crystal clear, the food was delicious, their wifi was spotless (which is important when you work from home) and the people are some of the nicest you will meet.  The only thing is the roads are narrow and hilly, so driving can be intimidating at first.  However after a day you get the hang of it.  People also make comments about how pricy this island is...it can be pricy, but it can also be reasonable.  We were pleasantly surprised at how reasonable most everything was...of course there are some restaurants and hotels that are crazy expensive, but that isn't what we like anyway.  We like to live like a local on vacation and that is what we strive to do.

We flew into St Maartin and took The Voyager ferry to St Barth from Oyster Pond.  We had the best food and conversations at this little bar while we waited for our Ferry!  You can jump a commuter flight, but we booked so late they were all full.  It is the shortest runway and I hear quite an experience that we must do next time!  I however loved the 30 minute ferry ride.

All of the beaches are public.  Only 3 of the 14 beaches have any buildings on them...all the rest are just natural and amazingly beautiful!  At the entrance of each beach you will see a tile sign that is significant to the area.  St Jean is built up in that it has a few very small hotels and some restaurants which have beach chairs their customers can use...it is adjacent to the famous Nikki Beach.

Yes, the runway is right next to St Jean.  It was so cool to watch the planes land.
Several of the beaches you must hike too...this was along the way to Colombia which is about a 45 minute hike.
And worth every minute of it!

Lunch at Cul de Sac Beach was so peaceful.

This is Ray pondering the hike to Washing Machine Beach from Grand Fond.  For some reason this hike did not scare me, but Ray says it should have!
The natural pools when you got to Washing Machine Beach (which is named for the way the waves hit) were amazing.

Always remember to stay grounded...this was one huge anchor!
The smaller the car the better...this little Jimney served us well!
We visited all of the beaches and I loved every single one of them, but I think Gouverneur is my very favorite (Ray's favorite was Saline).  Ray isn't much into swimming in the ocean for extended periods of time, but we swam at this beach for hours.  The water was amazing and the view breathtaking.

On the last night we watched the sun set at Shell Beach...look at all those tiny shells.

This was our hotel...it was an 8 room bed and breakfast.  Perfect location in the middle of the island and right near Lorient beach.
These are the hotel managers and they were so pleasant and gave us great tips.
Waiting for the ferry on the morning we departed.  I'm counting down the days till we can go back!

For my own records, I'm going to update this with the restaurants we liked and other tidbits when I'm not so tired.

March Celebration Download...

The St Patrick's Day parade has become a tradition around our house.  We were able to see most of it before the rain came pouring down!

We celebrated Easter at The Jones' with egg hunts for all!  It was such a fun, delicious day with family & friends that are like family!

The egg hunt wore Ray out!

We had gone to early church, so I had changed out of my Sunday best before going to Palestine.  However, I didn't want to miss a picture with some of my favorites.

My Birthday...

Was filled with family, friends, cards, calls, texts, messages, flowers, food and fun! I'm one thankful girl! And the celebrating isn't over...I still have several lunches and dinners planned with friends!

And I am one blessed girl with amazing friends...as the birthday lunches and dinners with friends went on for weeks...wish I would have taken pictures of all of them.

My Birthday weekend...

Was spent at the Horse Track in Hot Springs with Ray, Mom and Dad. I had never been and definitely plan to go back. Thanks to a gift certificate we also enjoyed staying at The Arlington Hotel, which is the largest and oldest hotel in Arkansas.

Also, this weekend I got the most delicious treat in the mail from Ray's parents...a strawberry pound cake! Yum!

I love Birthdays...

To kick off my Birthday month, I booked a massage and spa experience while I was in Vegas for work (and as a bonus I got a discount from the show I was at). Hands down best massage ever and the mineral spa was amazing. I see why this spa wins all the awards. Great way to wind down after a busy day working a trade show. I may have to end all trade shows with a night at Mandalay Bay going forward (you have to stay there to book the spa)!

NOLA

Jeni, Rebecca and I went to New Orleans to celebrate Rebecca's 40th birthday! I have never been, but will definitely be going back. It was awesome to be there with Jeni and Rebecca as they are NOLA pros! We really didn't spend time on Bourbon, but instead we went to the more local spots. We ate amazing food and enjoyed some good jazz on Frenchman street, shopped in the Garden District and at the French Market, went on a history tour of the city as well as to the World War II museum. Such a great weekend away!  We stayed at the Hotel Monteleone and this picture was taken at their famous carousel bar!

For sake of remembering restaurants...Cafe Du Monde, Peche (best raw oysters), Elizabeth's (egg Florentine), Killer Poboys, Revolution, Red Gravy (meatball omelet), Mahoney's (bloody Mary's), Tujages (grasshopper and brisket poboy). I can not wait to go back!

And the celebrating continued...

Saturday morning we celebrated Jeri and baby Walker (who was born 17 hours after his shower) with brunch at The Beauty Shop. And no, that is not Jeri on the end...that is Candace and she has another 6 weeks to go!
Then we celebrated the life of Aunt Jane who lost her battle with cancer. Loved that the service was at her favorite restaurant and we all ate and drank. A ton of family came in town, so the celebration continued on Sunday at our house!

Mustard Seed Ceramics

My dead friend and huge GROW supporter, Rebecca, has given me many colorful ceramic pieces over the years from Mustard Seed. I absolute love them and love the cause. They are a Christian community for adults with disabilities and ceramics are part of their therapy program. They sell their pieces as a way to raise funds for the organization which houses 18 adults full time. They are based in Brandon, MS and tonight they had their first home show! Rebecca was the perfect hostess and of course the products sell themselves. Normally they sell from their gift shop only.

Who doesn't love to shop for a cause? And since I hadn't spent any of my Christmas money...in addition to some presents, I got myself a couple of things. I absolutely love my new pie plate and bowl. I love pie plates for hot dips and to eat salads from. My bowl will be perfect for chips, but for now it is great for fruit!

"...if you have faith as small as a mustard seed you can say to this mountain, 'move from here to there' and it will move and nothing will be impossible for you." Mathew 17:20

Why?

Why oh why...do I fall asleep during almost every movie I watch expect for the ones I watch on a plane?

Over the weekend, Ray picked up 2 movies he had wanted to see from The Redbox. Both movies had gotten great reviews and have been nominated for awards, so I was excited...

The Martian-2 eyes closed about 45 minutes in. However, I woke up towards the end and felt like I didn't miss a beat! Yes, it was that entertaining!

Sicario-I love CIA shows and movies, but this one was so slow. I tried hard to stay awake as it was light outside when we watched it, but I'm guessing 1 eye closed about 30 mins in and 2 eyes closed within an hour and a half.

Then today I'm on a flight...I worked extra hard this morning, so I could nap on the plane. I was so tired. So, turn on Burnt (which mind you got maybe 1 star and no award nominations) and settle in for a nap. Two eyes open the entire 1 hr and 51 minutes of the movie. Was it a great movie...no, but it was good. So, the moral of this post is if you want me to stay awake for a movie you should take me with you on a 3+ hour plane ride!

Oh well, customers call and back on a plane I go!

Today's photo of the day. These mountains take my breath away every time I see them and for that I am so thankful!

When in SLC

I eat sushi at Takashi. Tonight, I was spoiled because Mr Takashi himself rolled for me.
Once you have Takashi you can't eat sushi just anywhere again!

Discontinued...

Three of my favorite products have been discontinued. I tried to stock up, but it was too late...supply and demand had already kicked in. My dry shampoo that is normally $18 is going for $73 on Amazon, so I'm on a mission to find replacements!

Due to many requests I'm going to attempt to blog more regularly again! 2016 has been pretty busy, but not very blog worthy...I've been to 3 funerals. I really hoped 3 would be it for the year, but I already have a 4th this coming weekend.
One blog worthy announcement...We welcomed a new nephew! Ray's sister and brother in law welcomed Silas into the world on January 25th. We can't wait to meet him!
It was a quiet Valentine's weekend in Memphis and now I'm Salt Lake City bound! It's my goal to post a picture a day while I'm gone...

Taking it back to the old school...

Because it was so cool!
Last Sunday we went to see Lily and Layne (and Emily and Caleb). Caleb made us delicious smothered deer and potatoes. While we were waiting for dinner, we started teaching the kids what we use to do at school (before text messages and hand held games). We all had so much fun. Especially the guys with their footballs and stars!

For when you have that Holiday....

Ham bone (thanks Emily for leaving the one y'all had at Thanksgiving in my freezer).  I forgot to take a picture, but this NY Times Ham Bone soup recipe made the house smell wonderful and was mighty tasty.
